Activities and Timeline

MSHA Grant Application. The Maine State Housing Authority has developed an Island Initiatives Grant to provide affordable housing on each of the Maine islands with year-round populations. The Initiative provides $210,000 per unit for up to 4 units. Home Start's application for $630,000 for the 3 units at 18 Central was submitted on July 21, 2023 and has now been approved. Closing completed on Dec 17th, 2024!

Request for Zoning Variance. Portland Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved the Practical Difficulty Variance on September 7, 2023. Thank you to all that wrote and spoke on behalf of the variance request!!

Current Building Timeline:

  • Close on property with City of Portland - DONE June 27th, 2024.

  • MSHA funding re-approved - Done November, 2024.

  • Closed on funding from MSHA, Dec 2024. Backyard ADUs has ordered the units and closed on the required permits. 

  • Fall 2024, demolition of the building to ground level and finishing of the new foundation - Done December, 2024.

  • Modulars put in place at 18 Central - Done! March 14th, 2025.

  • Planned May/June 2025, interior finishing completed

  • Planned July 1, 2025, prospective lease start date, pending Certificate of Occupancy
